POP-UP MARKETS: SAVING THE PLANET, ONE EVENT AT A TIME

Starting in December 2019, a small group of individuals got together who valued sustainability, circular economy, natural resources, locally grown food and empowerment of women and communities.

At this first meeting, we realized Lombok had many talented artisans who also embraced these values, but who had no outlet to share their traditional hand skills. We also realized that, in some cases, these valuable crafts were slowly disappearing through the generations. Then, we added the fact that after Lombok was hit with a devastating earthquake, many people also lost their jobs in tourism.

To the founding members of LEFM, however, we saw these obstacles as an opportunity to inspire people to get back to nature and use resources that could be easily sustained and made into handmade products. We saw an opening to create new ways for locals to earn income. We also saw an opportunity to help clean up our island.

This was the beginning of the first LEFM Pop-Up Market.

We organized the first LEFM Pop-Up Market to allow small communities to sell their products and continue working with natural resources – bamboo, rattan, coconut, loofah and more. We created an initiative to raise awareness about how important skills and knowledge can be for the future, as well as our environment. We created the start of an island-wide movement with the first-ever event that showcased eco-products of Lombok.

Find us all around Lombok and explore our beautiful island.

Events are organized all around Lombok so that we can support the economy in all regions – Senggigi, Gili Trawangan, Mangsit, Mataram, Kuta Lombok, Selong Belanak – and are very well accepted with local and tourist communities. Each event has up to 1000 visitors and brings the economy of Lombok up for around 70.000.000 IDR of income in total per event.

In addition, with our commitment to the environment, our vendors are forbidden to use plastic packaging and all need to follow criteria for their field of work. We try to be different from regular markets with high attention for the environmentally-friendly event.

To date, we have organized 13 markets with 30 vendors in each. Find the next market here!

POP-UP SHOPS: TAKING OVER POPULAR SPACES

In addition to Pop-Up Markets, LEFM also offers Pop-Up Shops throughout the year. Our first experiment was in collaboration with the only shopping mall in Lombok, Epicentrum. Here, we presented Eco projects from our members and products by setting a Lombok Eco Flea market POP UP SHOP for one month from 26.4.2020- 26.5.2021.

16 LEFM vendors presented their products, mission and work. With this project, we got closer to the local habitats of the capital of Lombok, Mataram, and promoted an eco-lifestyle as a necessity for the green future.

What’s next? A POP-UP SHOP is planned in Selong Belanak, Lombok soon — to align with the Superbike Event and showcase how much Lombok has to offer!

WEBINARS & EDUCATION: SHARING ECO-KNOWLEDGE

EDUCATION

All our education programs are based on giving knowledge to the younger generation to inspire them to become environmentalists. We work closely with our members so they can also showcase good practice to the young generation and motivate them to be more included in their local community. Events include:

1.     Workshops with Youth

  • In collaboration with SMP and SMA (High schools in Lombok), we provide workshops about how to become an ecopreneur, how to develop an idea toward sustainability and follow a circular economy.

  • So far we have conducted two workshops and we are in talks for more!

  • Contact us if you’d like us to visit your High School!

2.     Workshops for Kids

  • a) CATERPILLAR Kids learned how to use an old sock to create a fun toy in collaboration with Gili Eco Trust.

  • b)  + DIY CATERPILLAR After the workshop, we created a video to reach parents around the globe to make recycling as part of their fun activity with kids – to teach kids to see trash as a resource to explore their creativity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yciv_F7xQSE.

  • c) RECYCLED WALL ART DECO Kids learned how to make rope from plastic bags, and how to use it to create a recycled wood wall decoration and other art. In collaboration with Plastik Kembali and Furoshiki Lombok.

WEBINARS

We also present LEFM as a platform of the future for other organizations similar to ours, that can be easily copied and implemented in other countries. Through global organizations such as the Female Wave of Change and Eco-Civilization, we have presented our work and experiences to the world in the hope that we can inspire more communities to walk a similar path. MARKETING: VISUAL, PHOTOGRAPHY & DIGITAL SUPPORT STARTS HERE

  • We are constantly helping our members to improve their brand, first by improving their knowledge about sustainability and circular economy, and then by increasing their knowledge about selling, using free platforms such as Canva to improve their visual presence in social media and giving them free consulting about it all.

  • We also offer logo design for our members and have created designs for vendors including Bale Rattan, Pinalo and Lombok Eco Craft.

  • We offer product photo sessions to help members open e-shops and present their products in a beautiful way.

  • Next, we also support collaboration between brands so they can gain more visibility by sharing their customer base through collaborative projects.

  • Finally, since many members don’t have a webpage, we created the joint web page you’re visiting now! The goal of this site is to ensure all members can be reached directly and have promotion on the internet. With this we try to help vendors be positioned in the market as eco-producer and gain more leads to increase their sales and business.

E-BOOKS: SHARING IDEAS & RESOURCES

To spread LEFM knowledge and raise awareness of the global environmental crisis, we aim to be a movement for a healthier and eco-friendly lifestyle.

To support this mission, we create e-books including:

  • SUSTAINABLE CHEF: A book with sustainable organic recipes in a collaboration with two of our members to promote organic food and natural dishes. Download here!

  • 100 TIPS AND TRICKS FOR SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE: A publication to help you be more aware of how you as an individual can leave less carbon footprint and make a low impact on the environment. Download here!

  • PHOTOBOOK: A photo book of our community’s work and natural resources that Lombok has. Download here!

VIDEO PROMOTION: SHARING OUR STORIES

To date, we have created two videos about the Lombok Eco Flea Market which showcase all our members and their sustainable products. Check them out here:

CLEAN-UP EVENTS: KEEPING LOMBOK BEACHES HEALTHY

In addition to selling eco-friendly products, LEFM vendors and visitors also participate in beach clean-ups! In collaboration with Ocean Care Lombok, we aim to raise awareness with locals about the lifecycle of trash and how it can be sorted, recycled or upcycled!

  • To date, we’ve organized two beach clean-ups that have removed more 250 kg of plastic trash from our coastline.

  • These events gathered around 150 volunteers!

Contact us to collaborate with LEFM on your next Clean-up!

INCLUSION FOR ALL: SUPPORTING LOMBOK’S DIFFERENTLY-ABLED ARTISTS

During every Pop-up market, we include an organization for differently-able people — most recently BLIND AID Lombok — helping them gain income by sharing their talents and message to visitors of Lombok Eco Flea Market. We want to stand firm that no disabled person should be excluded from the community and we support fully that everyone finds their way to be self-standing.

PRE-LOVED CLOTHING: DONATING & SHARING EVERY MONTH

With LEFM member, Pituq Foundation, we work together to motivate visitors of Lombok Eco Flea Market to donate their unused clothes to those in need. With this effort, we try to raise awareness of poverty differences on Lombok island and make a balance with it by continuous help from our platform. As LEFM is a very well-visited event every month, we try to spread our reach to attract people to also do something good and share the movement of constant support across Lombok!

Have unused clothes — in good condition — that you’d like to donate? Contact us!
